“The word of God is living and active [efficient], and sharper than any double-edged sword, even penetrating to the division between soul and spirit, and both joint and marrow, and able to discern thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)
If there was ever a verse that described how I see scripture, this would certainly be a top contender (asking a biblical scholar to choose one is just cruel). Living and active – scripture invites participation and self-scrutiny by its very nature, and if I don’t read it as such, I’m not reading it right. I am by no means advocating for flat, literal interpretations everywhere at always, but I am saying that scripture is communication that invites us all to transformation. This communicative process requires us to be good listeners, faithful listeners, careful listeners, curious listeners, but ultimately listeners who engage as they are challenged by it. Careful study should end in transformation.
